First, I'd like to set the record straight. The Nom Comm report I distributed
last month was not my handiwork, but was forwarded from Darlene Criss, the
Chairman of the Nominating Committee. Some newsletters presented it as mine
- my apologies if I had not made that clear.
And now to the kudos; a big THANK YOU to all of the local groups of this
region. Thanks to all our wonderful volunteers our region has achieved 100%
participation in the MERF scholarship program. This is a program that is, in
my opinion, well worth the time and effort involved. I am happy to see that
many others are of the same mind. It's nice to know that we won't have to
turn any applicants away because there was no one willing to help out.
National testing day was yet another success. According to the national
office: As of 10/28/02 there were 1163 tested at 162 sites. Media coverage
included,9 reporters taking the test, 35 print articles, 2 TV reports, 20
radio including CBS radio, and a Wireless Flash story.
According to Pam Donahoo, "Most of the individuals taking the Mensa test on
National Testing Day indicate they learned about Mensa and the test sites on
the internet. Other strong indications were family and friends, other
Mensans and word of mouth. Surprisingly, an appreciable number of test
takers said they learned about us from Geena Davis on David Letterman. Also
mentioned were the Far Side comic strip and the movie Me, Myself & Irene.
The local proctors and PR coordinators are to be congratulated for their
energy and initiative in getting the word out. We have also seen several
major articles after the fact and we know of several articles currently in
the works. I believe we far outpaced last year. The majority of those who
indicated a date of birth on the evaluation sheet said they were born in the
70's or 80's. If this bears out on the testing sheets it represents a
significant shift to younger potential members."
We are trying something new this year. If you check out the Region 2 website
you'll find a page which is
dedicated to those planning to run for the
office of RVC #2. It's been so long since we had a contested election; it
was decided to try to make it as easy as possible to bring information to
the members of the region. I urge everyone to check out this page, and to
vote in the upcoming election. (No, I am NOT running for any national
office.)
The official minutes for the September AMC are now available online at the
American Mensa Website. As for the upcoming meeting in December, all LocSec
and Editors receive a copy of the agenda and this too should be available
online. If you have any questions, concerns, or opinions on anything
included on this agenda, be sure to contact me and let me know about it!
Enjoy the holidays!
