RVC2 - My Two Bits - May 2004
by Ed Gordon, RVC Region 2

As I am writing this, it is coming up on April Fools’ Day. I hope that y’all had a safe and fun plans for the day. April 1 is the beginning of the renewal year, so that the membership figures will adjust accordingly. If you have not renewed yet, then please do so, we need and want your membership.

With the new membership year starting, we are eagerly anticipating the results for ProxyQuest. The goal appears to have been reached, for we stand at 110% of goal. That number will adjust as the non-renewed memberships drop away, but we are confident that there will be a lot to celebrate at the AG in Las Vegas, when we get to have the proxies cast to change the Certificate of Incorporation, and we can return to business as usual.

There were two Regional Gatherings in the month of March, Snowball, and Jefferson County. They were both excellent, although I had little time to spend at either, I enjoyed what I could. The AMC Meeting was quite exhausting in Charlottesville. For those of you who had a chance to meet with the national officers, I hope that your conversations helped enlighten you on the functioning of American Mensa. There was a lot of planning necessary for the Annual Gathering in Las Vegas, and we spent a lot of time dealing with Risk Management. The major decision that was made at the AMC meeting was to accept the report of the SIGs (Special Interest Groups) Advisory Committee regarding said Risk Management. This report calls for a major change with how we deal with the SIGs, requesting that we implement a plan to bring the SIGs in closer. By doing this, we will be able to meet the necessities of Risk Management, and also, and in my opinion, more importantly, to allow the SIGs to use the National Office as a clearinghouse for their administrative functions, freeing the SIGs officers of these tasks, allowing them more time to enjoy the SIGs raisons d’etre.

Do not forget the Leadership Development Workshop. There are still a few slots left, and we will welcome all attendees at the event in Rehoboth Beach, DE on May 8. Please contact me and let me know of your plans, so that Maria Sawczuk and I can plan accordingly. We have three new leaders for Region 2, and I would like your help to welcome them aboard. Dave Cahn of Metropolitan Washington has agreed to be our ombudsman, and he was able to talk with Eldon Romney, the national ombudsman to get a feel for the job. Sheila Gross, after several years of hard work has stepped down as Scholarship Chair, and has been replaced by Selena Updegraf of Central Pennsylvania. Finally, Marianne Demkó of Thomas Jefferson has agreed to help offload Marc Lederman, and will be the new Region 2 webmaster. Thanks to all, and welcome aboard.

Finally, there is going to be a hiatus for Regional Gatherings. The next one will be in October in Downingtown PA. The good news is that Tidewater Mensa has chosen a hotel in Virginia Beach, VA, so we will have an oceanfront RG, thanks to them, and it will be taking place in November.
