I wrote my column
a little late this month so I could talk about the AG. Mary Lee Kemper and I
co-chaired the Pittsburgh AG, with the help of 40 committee members and at least
100 additional volunteers. More than 1880 people were registered, attending 330
programs and events, and feasting on Nancy Heller's neverending nosh. The Region
2 Meet & Greet was well attended. We filled our room and spilled out into the
hallway. Thanks to all who showed up, and for Rawligh Sybrant for taking a group
photo.
The bid of North Texas Mensa to host the 2013 AG in Fort Worth, Texas was
approved at the AMC meeting. Other upcoming AGs include Dearborn, Michigan in
2010; Portland, Oregon in 2011; and Reno, Nevada in 2012.
Congratulations to the following members of our region who received awards at
the AG:
Heather
Poirier, from Metropolitan Washington Mensa (MWM), received the Chairman
Certificate of Appreciation for taking over the AMC minutes when we needed help.
Bill Murray,
from Delaware Valley Mensa (DVM), received an American Mensa Certificate of
Appreciation for a noteworthy contribution. Bill is a moderator in the AML
Community (aka the Mensa Forums).
Adriana
Platner, from Lehigh Pocono Mensa, won a PRP award for best web site calendar.
Two of our
teams finished in the top 20 on CultureQuest. The Gordian Nots, captained by
Stephanie Smilay from MWM, finished in 8th place. The Carbon-based Life Forms,
captained by Elaine Brody from DVM, finished in 18th place.
Central
Pennsylvania Mensa was Region 2's winner of the first annual PEP Rally contest.
They won a $1000 one-day LDW to be held sometime before June 30, 2010. Look for
information in the upcoming months on how to enter the next PEP Rally
competition.
I plan to
visit Thomas Jefferson Mensa in August, and attend their annual Corn Boil. This
event, hosted at Dave Remine's Luray home on August 29, is open to all Mensa
members and their guests. Dave provides a grill, hot dogs, corn, fixings, and
some beverages. You bring something to share and a party attitude. Last year saw
86 people from 10 states converge for great conservation, food, drink, and
recreation. Some made it a weekend long event by visiting the world famous Luray
Caverns and/or rafting on the nearby Shenandoah River. If you'd like more
information about this event, please contact me or Dave.
