Pay
dues now, and lock in the current rate!
Inflation
rates across the country have soared, and American Mensa has
felt the impact throughout the budget. In the past year,
expenses in areas including fuel, paper and postage have
increased nearly 45%. We have balanced most of these increases
by "tightening our belts" in every budget category, but a dues
increase has still become necessary. Effective Jan. 1, 2009,
annual dues will increase to $59. Second-family-member rates
will increase to $39, 3-year memberships to $160 and 5-year
memberships to $260. Renewing is easy by visiting
http://www.us.mensa.org/renew
or calling 888/294-8035 ext. 199. |

HELP WANTED!
Region 2 is Looking for a Few (More)
Good Readers
by John Williams
I have recently been
named as the Region 2 Scholarship Chair. After Scholarship
Essays have been read locally the winning essays are forwarded
to me for reading at the Regional level. Just as the Local
Scholarship Chair cannot participate in reading the essays for
grading (to ensure neutrality) the Regional Chair needs other
people to read the essays forwarded by the Local Chairs. I would
like to get a reader from each group. I am not trying to
undermine any current teams, but to keep the program running I
need someone who is not reading this year at the Local level.
If you have already been reading for your local group please
consider helping to find a replacement so I don't short change
your Local Chair.
At the Regional level I will be sending copies of each essay to
each reader. Local selections are due to the Regional Chair with
a postmark deadline of 17 February. I would expect to have them
all by the 21st and would hope to have copies in the mail by the
24th. I would need to have them back to me by 10 March so that I
can collate the results and still meet my deadline. Exactly when
you do the reading is up to you so long as you can meet the
deadline. If you have read before at the Regional level please
contact me so I can keep you on.
If this sounds interesting, and if you expect to have an open
weekend (to read and grade about 100 essays) in late February or
early March, give it some thought. This is an opportunity to do
something really worthwhile for Mensa. If you have any further
questions, feel free to email
me.
